The Third Hitotsubashi Global Advisory Board Meeting
The Hitotsubashi University has set up the “Hitotsubashi Global Advisory Board” to provide the president with advice pertaining to the administration of the university, research, and educational activities from an international perspective. The third meeting of the board was held online on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
Comprising three external members and the President of Hitotsubashi University, the board has been established to support small group discussions. The external members appointed to the board have had prior experience as presidents or vice presidents of SIGMA member universities or other leading foreign institutions. Professor Arnoud De Meyer (former President of Singapore Management University), Professor Edeltraud Hannapi-Egger (former Rector of Vienna University of Economics and Business), and Professor Leslie Hannah (former Pro-Director of London School of Economics and Political Science) attended the third meeting.
The first meeting of the board focused on enhancing international research competitiveness and discussed strategies to attract exceptional researchers from various countries. The outcome of the meeting significantly contributed to the advancement of the university’s Hitotsubashi Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS) Bridges Next project to recruit young faculty members. At the second meeting, the discussions focused on the effective management approaches for various cross-departmental organizations, such as the research centers established by the university under the HIAS, and methods to be implemented to foster young researchers. The theme of the third meeting was “Fostering Doctoral Human Resources”. The board members discussed initiatives to boost students’ desire to pursue doctoral studies and ways to support other career paths apart from research.
Overall, the members introduced various approaches that would encourage undergraduate students to pursue doctoral studies and provided examples of engagement with the industry in DBA (Doctor of Business Administration) Program, and other interdisciplinary teaching organizations. The members actively participated in the discussions, including discussions on career paths after the completion of doctoral studies.
In light of the discussions held at this meeting, the Hitotsubashi University will enhance support for doctoral students and further innovate its graduate programs in the future.
