Austria’s Federal Minister of Justice gave a lecture on September 29

On Thursday September 29th, 2016, Dr. Wolfgang Brandstetter, Austria’s Federal Minister of Justice, gave a lecture themed “Legal Challenges of Hate Crime and Hate Speech in Europe” at Josuikai Centennial Hall and Professor Yumiko Nakanishi, Graduate School of Law presided the lecture. Dr. Brandstetter, who used to be giving lectures as a professor at University of Vienna and Vienna University of Economics and Business (both universities are exchange partners of Hitotsubashi University) before becoming the Minister of Justice, introduced legal challenges against hate crimes by giving some recent examples and judicial precedents in Austria and EU member states.

More than 100 university students and staffs as well as several foreign government officials including Dr. Hubert Heiss (Austrian ambassador to Japan) came to the lecture and enjoyed intellectual cultural exchange. Lively questions and answers followed Dr. Brandstetter’s presentation, and the lecture finished in success.
