For MEXT(Monbukagakusho) Scholarship Students

Confirmation of Enrollment

For receiving MEXT Scholarship, please confirm enrollment by sign on the paper at Kokusai-Ka (International Affairs Office : IAO) once a month. If you are ICS student, you can also sign for registration your enrollment at ICS office.

We have two deadlines and you can sign either deadlines. If you come before 1st deadline, you'll receive the allowance within this month. If you come after 1st deadline, you'll receive it next month.

This scholarship allowance is offered for the purpose of studying within Japan. If you spent whole one month abroad, you cannot receive the allowance. When you leave Japan or your accommodation for a certain period of time, please notify IAO or ICS office by submitting exit permission, etc.

As for the deadline, please check the following file, the calender of MEXT student registration confirmation.

*Categories and contents of the scholarship is following;

Undergraduate students: ¥126,000 a month
Research students: ¥153,000 a month
Master's student: ¥155,000 a month
Ph.D. student: ¥156,000 a month
Young Leaders Program students: ¥255,000 a month

Extending Scholarship Period

Research students and undergraduate students entering graduate cource and Master program students entering Doctoral program, who have particularly strong academic results and fulfill certain requirements, can apply for extending scholarship period. However, not all the applicants are accepted.

The major conditions and notice for the extension of the scholarship are stated below.

Undergraduate Students (undergraduate level)

If you are an undergraduate recipient and have failed to graduate, you are ineligible to apply for scholarship extention. In addition, you have to rearch a level in academic achivements for application.

Research Students (graduate level)

  1. If you are a research student who entered the University in April and;

    ●If you go on to a Masters program or Professional graduate course

    →You are eligible to apply for scholarship extension only if you enter the Master's program within 24 months from time you came to Japan.

    ●If you go on to a Doctoral program

    →You are eligible to apply for scholarship extension only if you entered the program less than 24 months from the time you came to Japan.

    For instance;

    If you came to Japan in April 2011 and if you go on to a Doctoral program:
    *in October 2011, you are eligible to apply for scholarship continuation;
    *in April 2012, eligible;
    *in October 2012, eligible;
    *in April 2013, ineligible.

  2. If you are a research student who entered the University in October and;

    ●If you go on to a Masters program or Professional graduate course

    →You are eligible to apply for scholarship extension only if you enter the Master's program within 18 months from time you came to Japan.

    ●If you go on to a Doctoral program

    →You are eligible to apply for scholarship extension only if you entered the program within 18 months from the time you came to Japan.

    For instance;

    If you came to Japan in October 2011 and received a government scholarship for October 2011 to March 2013, and if you go on to a Doctoral program:
    *in April 2012, you are eligible to apply for scholarship continuation;
    *in October 2012, eligible;
    *in April 2013, eligible.

  3. If you go on to a Doctal program from a Masters program or a Professional graduate course;

    you are eligible to apply for scholarship extension unless you are studying after a minimum term of study, or you have failed to finish the Master's program or the Professional graduate course in the term.

    *If you meet the requirements stated above and you are allowed to ask the government to continue providing scholarships for you, your petition may be rejected through screening partly due to your academic achievements.

Travel Expenses

When MEXT Scholarship Students return to their country whithin the months their scholarship period expires, they will be issued an air ticket of an international flight, from Narita International Airport to the international airport nearest their place of residence in their home country. With regard to the students who are enable to apply for extending scholarship period, we send to them related documents with that application forms.

However, travel expenses from Japan will not be paid under following circumstances;

  1. If you do not depart from Japan by the appointed day.
  2. Students who do not apply for the return air fare by the appointed day.
  3. Students who return home for personal resons during their term of scholarship.
  4. If students countinue to stay in Japan rather than return their home country after the scholarship expires.
  5. Students who receive travel expenses assistance from a institution other than MEXT.
  6. If students violate any article of their pledge to MEXT.

Moving on Another Graduate School

With regard to the moving on another graudate school of MEXT Scholarship Students, him or her request may be permitted, provided that he or she faces an unavoidable problem. As these requests are not always permitted, please talk to IAO as soon as possible.

*If you are a MEXT Scholarship Student who was recommended by Hitotsubashi University (Daigaku-suisen), you are not allowed on any case to transfer to another university.

Withdrawal of Scholarship

If you are forced to renounce a government scholarship during the term of your scholarship because you have to transfer to another university, stay for a long period out of Japan, care for a sick family member or obtain a job, or you are affected by other unavoidable circumstances, you should tell the IAO about the renouncement as early as possible.
