International Symposium of the European and Asia-Pacific Social Science Network “Economic Revitalization in the Asia-Pacific Region and Europe” will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2013

Hitotsubashi University co-sponsored by the EUSI presents the International Symposium of the European and Asia-Pacific Social Science Network “Economic Revitalization in the Asia-Pacific Region and Europe” on October 29, 2013.

The global economy went into a slump after the Lehman shock turned the subprime mortgage crisis in the United States into a global financial crisis. Around the world, governments are trying to tackle their domestic structural economic problems by improving the productivity and competitiveness of their industries.

The Japanese economy in particular experienced the so-called “lost decade” after the bursting of the asset bubble and the financial crisis in the 1990s. Under the Abe Administration, the Japanese government has begun to conduct a package of economic policies which include three “arrows” of economic policy: 1) an active easy monetary policy; 2) flexible fiscal stimulus; and 3) growth strategy to encourage private investments.

This Symposium consists of two parts. The morning session focuses on the current movement in Japan for economic revitalization, by inviting Mr. Hiroshi Mikitani as a keynote speaker. In the afternoon session, Academic representatives from ten universities in Europe, Asia and Pacific that constitute the European and Asia-Pacific Social Science Network, present and discuss the trends and issues in economic revitalization in respective regions or from comparative perspectives.

The afternoon session consists of academic presentations and panel discussion. It will focus on the structural aspects of economy to consider how to improve productivity and competitiveness of domestic economy under the main topic “Economic Revitalization in the Asia-Pacific Region and Europe”. We will compare the current situations, desirable prescriptions, and future perspectives between the Asia-Pacific Region and Europe. We may also consider the possible ways in which the Asia-Pacific Region and Europe might cooperate in economic and/or political arenas to proceed towards economic revitalization.
