The EU Studies Institute in Tokyo (EUSI) officially launched on Friday, 22nd May

 The EU Studies Institute in Tokyo (EUSI) officially launched on Friday, 22nd May and its Opening Ceremony and International Symposium was held at Mita Campus, Keio University. The approximately 200 guests participated in the entire program from each field of Government, Business and Academy.

 The EUSI is a centre for academic education, research and outreach activities on the European Union. It has been managed by the Consortium of three universities in Tokyo, Hitotsubashi University, Keio University and Tsuda College with the financial support from the European Commission for four and half years. EUSI will develop new courses on the EU for both undergraduate and graduate students and will encourage graduate students interested in the EU with scholarships and internship. The joint research among researchers in two groups, “Law and Politics” and “Economics” will be conducted by the collaboration with EU Studies Associations and Institutions in the Asia-Pacific region and the world. The EUSI will promote the outreach activities to enhance knowledge and understanding of the EU in Japan.

 At the Ceremony, Ambassador Hugh Richardson, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Japan and Mr. Tamotsu Tokunaga, Director General of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) gave their speeches to celebrate and encourage the launching of the EUSI. As for the International Symposium, H.E. Mr. Kazuo Asakai, the former Japanese Ambassador to the European Union gave his lecture on “What purpose does the EU research in Japan serve?” and Prof. Emil J. Kirchner, Ad Personam Jean Monnet Chair, and Coordinator of the Jean Monnet European Centre of Excellence, Department of Government, University of Essex, gave his lecture on “The Study of European Integration: Reflections and Outlook”.

 At the welcome reception, Mr. Stefan Alois Huber, Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Head of Delegation gave his remarks and Mr. Glen S. Fukushima, President & CEO made a speech and a toast.
