Hitotsubashi University Boat Club participated in Henley Royal Regatta 2014 in the UK

Hitotsubashi University Boat Club Men’s Eight participated in the Henley Royal Regatta 2014 held in the UK from July 2 to 6.

The Henley Royal Regatta is held every year on the River Thames by the town of Henley-on-Thames in the south of the UK and lasts for 5 days over the first weekend in July. Having started in 1839 the regatta is now regarded as one of the most historic and prestigious in the world. Our Men’s Eight entered the Temple Challenge Cup for students, in which 74 crews from all over the world applied for entry and 32 crews qualified. Our Eight was exempted from a qualifying race because of their recent excellent results such as taking second place at the national university championship last year and winning the national lightweight class championship this year.

In the seventh race on the first day of the regatta our crew competed against Cornell University, USA. They beat the heavyweight crew by half a length and qualified for the last 16.

In the second race on the second day they were up against the A.A.S.R Skoll (Algemene Amsterdamse Studenten Roeivereniging Skoll) student club from the Netherlands, and were defeated by three-quarters of a length. They didn’t make it to the last 8 but put up a good fight in a headwind against a heavyweight crew.
